"No nonsense French fare with a Cassoulet worth travelling across Paris for."
You are not going to stumble across L'Assiette whilst wandering aroiund the nicer parts of Paris. Its a destination, but not much of one on first appearance. tucked away in the rather scruffy 14th Arrondissement in Paris I suggest you get a cab tehre and get a cab back to reality,
Why bother - ibecause ts all about the Cassoulet. Realry have i been to a restaurant where one dish so defines the experience. There are some nice touches at L'Assiette. Lovely even. The bread, ham an butter that serve as a rustic amuse bouche on arrval are simple but wonderful. The table was waited upon by the owners son who at 14 was both charming and has his career path mapped out for him should he so choose. Like the restaurant itself he was honest, a little bit shy but ultimately completely endearing . Yes the Foie Gras pate is coarse and well made. The Coquilles St Jacques fat, slithery and everything that most retaurant scallops never aspire to be but thats not why you need to come here. You need to come here for the Cassoulet. Skip the starter. Go straight to your main. Devour, reflect and retreat. This dish is that good,
Wines are served by the carafe and very resoanably price, the desserts are standard French fare such as Iles Flotant, Souffles and they boast an interesting selection of artisan cheese. All of this is a sideshow to the main event.
The tiny brigade is led by the eponymous David Rathberger who cut his teeth working for Alain Ducasse in some of Paris' finest 3 stars. He jacked all that in to return to a more modest, dare I say honest, form of provincial cooking from his home terrior. The Michelin Guide's loss is your gain,
